I recently played While the World Ends, which actually uses an r-map/geographical map hybrid for play. That was quite interesting! Adding relationships to the map is part of the strategy (which you need to win).
When we play online, we’ve had pretty good experiences with shared Google docs, which we update as we play. It’s not perfect but it works.
