I can’t think of a better gamer compatibility test than asking “what would you use to run X?” Where X is something about which you have no strong opinions, but is clear enough that anyone will understand the reference. So: a popular genre, a recent movie or book, a common trope.

  1. Oh for sure.

There’s a lot of space between “not my first choice but tell me more” and “we want radically different things out of sitting around a table making shit up.”

  2. I’m not sure if that would work as well for those of us who are system-promiscuous. For me, I would have to ask the question several times about completely different values of X, and see if they say the same thing each time. If they do, we are probably not compatible. 🙂

  3. Paul Beakley yes because sometimes is “I’d rather play with DND rules because magic users are the bollocks” some other “I really want supercrunchy gurps melee” some other “I like that you get to win the roll yet fail forward or lose the roll and win backwards” in some story games. The why is conducive to interesting stuff.
