Village

Village

Dad

I haven’t actually played a board game with my dad in probably 30 years, and he’s who taught me to love games of all kinds. What a treat.

When we played board games together, probably the most complicated was Risk. Old school with the little wooden cubes and the holdout position in Madagascar or Australia that meant the game couldn’t just be over until someone conceded. Village was a revelation to him, and he started asking about the rest of my collection.

After I won, we shook hands because that’s what I always do after a game, win or lose. We didn’t used to do that when I was a kid; I’d bawl my eyes out when I lost and he’d growl that I just need to play better. Today, he smiled and thought it was a really nice gesture.
