Simurgh

Simurgh

At the top of my why did I back this on Kickstarter, again? list is this game from NKSN. Actually, they hit me up for the Simurgh expansion because I backed Mistfall, which I like very much, and I just threw the core game on top. There’s something about raising dragons, and something else about a power struggle, dunno, it’s pretty abstract.

It’s nice! Fairly straightforward worker placement game where the twist is that half the board is variable. Half the board is comprised of fixed locations, half is built and competed over through gameplay.

Being otherwise straightforward worker placement, it has all the same strengths and weaknesses as others in the space: not acrimonious but not that interactive either, tends to be draggy with analytical players, not an especially dramatic finish. My favorite part of the game is the art and atmospherics, which are both marvelous.

We played one short game to learn and then one medium game. One player decided to pull the endgame trigger despite not being in position to win, and when that’s possible and desirable it gives me pause.

Probably a 7/10, which tbqh is pretty okay in my book. I’m good with a low stress, easy intro game for folks who don’t want to build an elaborate engine or invade anyone’s territory.

Does it play similarly to Caylus or Lords of Waterdeep in that respect? Because I like both those games quite a bit.
